What is a healthy home? Does it mean that your house is clean? Or maybe it is referring to the air you breathe in your home. Maybe it means that you are using eco-friendly cleaners and recycling your trash. Of course, it could be referring to the way you live, how you eat, what you do, and how you act. Basically, a healthy home is a healthy lifestyle. And having a healthy home contributes to having a happy home as well.

Do You Have a Healthy Home?

If you are at home, look around you. Do you think your home is healthy? Would you feel comfortable getting down on the floor and playing with your children or grandchildren? Is there enough natural sunlight in your home? Are your countertops clean enough to eat off of? Can you go into your bathroom and not see smudges on the mirror or toothpaste stains in the sink? Is your air and water quality good? You can check these things with simple tests you can buy at the store or get more information from your local health department. There are other things that can make your home healthy such as eating nutritionally, exercising regularly, drinking a lot of water, and getting along well with family.

Cleaning your home thoroughly with environmentally safe cleaners such as vinegar can make a big difference in your daily life. Believe it or not, a clean home can elevate your mood drastically. Getting the air circulating with a whole home fan or several pedestal fans can also improve your mood. Also, aromatherapy has been proven to reduce stress and depression, increase your energy level, and give you an overall happy and calm feeling. If you have small children, make sure there are no fall risks, the electrical outlets are covered, and there are no cords that are within the children’s reach. All homes should have emergency exits in case of a fire or other disaster and a plan of action that everyone in the house is familiar with. This can mean the difference between life and death in the case of a tornado, hurricane, flood, or other disaster.

Believe it or not, having a mentally healthy home can sometimes be harder than having a physically healthy home. That is because mental health is not as easy to spot. Make sure you and your family are able to talk to each other about things, especially if you have adolescents in the family. The ages between 11 and 17 can be tough on everyone so you need to keep the lines of communication open and let them know that they can talk to you about anything.
