Friends come and go throughout the years. We all have friends who are meant to take us through a specific time in our life. But most of us have that one friend who we always come back to. No matter how long it’s been between visits, you still are the best of friends when you see each other again.
But long distance friendships don’t come easy. It gets really hard to be away from your person, the one who knows absolutely everything about you.
From someone who’s been in a lasting long distance friendship, here are a few tips to get you through to the next visit.
So, calling your friend is an obvious thing to do, but it’s likely that your schedules don’t always (or rarely ever) match up. When you do get that dreaded voicemail message – leave a voicemail instead of hanging up. Sing a song, say something sappy, just let them know you were thinking about them. You never know what kind of impact a silly voicemail can have (or maybe you do if this person really is your best friend).
Write a Letter
Text messages and phone calls are all fine and dandy, but you can do more. Send a letter to your friend. It shows that you’ve taken the time to do something kind for them. And it provides a keepsake for years to come. You can even include pictures with your letter. This might seem old school, but you might find that you get excited waiting for the next return letter.
Send a Gift
You don’t have to wait for birthdays to send a gift to show your friend that you care, but it doesn’t have to be anything big. Simply mail their favorite snack to them. Or have a pizza delivered to their door (prepaid) when you know they’re going to be home alone on a Netflix binge.
Watch Shows Together
Speaking of Netflix, you can watch your favorite shows together. Get on Skype and screen share, or start your show at the same time (or as close as you can get). Then you can experience each other’s reaction to the drama. It’ll feel like you were never apart.
Use Social Media
We are in the digital age, and technology is only becoming a more immersive part of our world. So take advantage! With media like SnapChat, Facebook Messenger, and Marco Polo, you and your friend can see each other every day! Send cheesy videos, silly pictures, hold conversations, and just keep in touch.
When you keep in touch with your long distance best friend, you’ll find that it’s much easier to get back into the swing of things when you do see each other again.
What to do when you visit next?
Even though they are your best friend, sometimes when you see each other there’s this awkward “what do we do now?” phase when you’ve completely caught up on all the drama and feel like you need to do something.
So make a plan. Find a few things locally that you can do. With Fall coming up, you can use MazePlay.com to find a local corn maze. Go out for coffee or hot cocoa, see a movie you’ve both been dying to see, or get a bunch of junk food and enjoy a your favorite TV shows together at home.
We are lucky to live in a time when it is so easy to keep in touch with people. All it takes is a little thought and a small effort.
